Working at the age of 15 in Louie's Cafe in my hometown of La Porte, Indiana wasn't my first job, but it was my first taste of serving others.
I was a busser cleaning tables, any chance I had to catch up with friends or listen to life advice from elderly customers I took.
As you can imagine, many times I would get lost in conversation that I would have to get reminded of what I was doing there in the first place.
To this day I can still see Louie sitting down at "his table" yelling out to me,
"Felipe, get back to work!"
"Focus on what you can do."
It's easier said than done when your work involves being the first point of contact in an ever-changing capitalistic industry.
"Why is my bill so high?! Why doesn't my phone work?! Why can't I go back to the plan I used to have?!
Why?! Why?! Why?!
I took all the complaints personally until I realized. "Many customers have the same problems, but not all are as offensive as some are."
Having this thought helped me to understand that sometimes there's something bigger than just a cellphone problem.
And so my approach to helping people changed.
